Coraciiformes TAG

Coraciiformes TAG: Kingfishers

Kingfishers are widely distributed across the world, occuring in all regions that do not maintain a permanent ice cap. Habitat varies greatly, ranging from the arid deserts of Australia to the temperate forests of North America to the rich rainforests of southeast Asia, While there are 92 species of kingfishers found world-wide, overall this family of birds is not widely maintained in zoological facilities. The Guam Micronesian Kingfisher and Laughing Kookaburra are maintained as SSP species in the Coraciiformes Taxon Advisory Group. There are several additional species historically housed or currently found in smaller numbers including Blue-breasted Kingfishers, White-throated Kingfishers, Collared Kingfishers, Belted Kingfishers, Pied Kingfishers, and Blue-winged Kookaburra. Active conservation projects exist for the Guam Micronesian Kingfisher and the Tuamotu (Niau) Kingfishers found in the South Pacific.
